Against all Odds "The Rise of Don Zaggah"
Chikumbutso Misinde, known in the music world as Don Zaggah "Safa Boss", was born in 1989 in Nchalo and raised in Safalao, Ndirande, Blantyre, Malawi. Despite growing up under challenging circumstances, raised by a single mother, Chikumbutso’s determination shaped his path early on. By the age of 10, he had already become the breadwinner for his family, navigating the tough streets of Safalao to make ends meet. School was never easy, often attending without breakfast, and he paid his own way through his education while his father lived in South Africa, only occasionally providing support. Chikumbutso discovered his passion for music at the age of 12, influenced by talented local musicians such as Evance Mereka and Zebron Kankhunda, who mentored him in his early years. While he started as a dancer, his mentors helped him develop his songwriting skills, pushing him to focus on school but also recognizing his musical potential. He attended Ndirande FP School for primary education and later Namalimwe CDSS for secondary school. His passion for IT led him to study computer technology, although the school where he pursued his studies eventually closed. In 2004, Chikumbutso crossed paths with Vic Marley, who took an interest in grooming his talent. Though Vic’s untimely passing cut short their collaboration, Chikumbutso continued his musical journey with Vic's brother, Star Marley. Together with Nep Man, they formed a powerful trio, recording music and touring together, building a reputation in the Malawian music scene. Now living in Centurion, South Africa, Chikumbutso continues to nurture his dual passions for music and IT. He founded his own record label, Safa Musique, which manages artists, organizes events, promotes music, and helps with distribution and marketing. Chikumbutso’s journey from the streets of Safalao to building his own music empire is a testament to his resilience and dedication. Today, he is not just a musician but an inspiration to many, committed to giving back to his community and empowering the next generation of artists.
